Dynamics GP finally has a Historical Inventory Trial Balance Report!

Monday, August 10th, 2009

It may not mean anything to most people, but for those who have been waiting for the ability to print a Historical Trial Balance out of inventory in Microsoft Dynamics GP, it’s a happy day!  Gone are the days of remembering to print the Stock Status at month end and remembering that not all transactions make it into the Historical Stock Status.

But wait, it doesn’t just automatically reconcile to your General Ledger if you’ve upgraded from Dynamics GP.  You need to install and run the Historical Inventory Trial Balance (HITB) Reset Tool to reset your inventory balance.  Each step of this process must be completed before you can move on to the next level.  The process includes Reconcile, Creating Clearing Transactions, and running the Validation Report.  Yes it’s a bit time consuming, but once it’s done you can use the HITB Report to reconcile to General Ledger any time of any month.  Finally.

ERP Software Implementations Gone Wrong: Part I

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

“Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.”
- Maria Robinson

Organizations that decide to take that next step from Quickbooks, Peachtree, or other entry level accounting software system, typically do so with a confident understanding that it will take them to the next level in their business life cycle. They’ve outgrown the simple inventory systems, the modest job cost functionality, or the non-existent service dispatch software required to keep things running smoothly and ultimately, keep customers coming back time and time again. Compliance doesn’t have to be difficult

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Are you tracking employee data in Excel or another database outside of your accounting software system? If you outsource payroll, you probably are. If you’re using Dynamics GP you can use the employee database even though you don’t process your own payroll. You can send employee letters, produce compliance reports, or send internal status changes using one tool:

• Employee address, telephone number, birth date
• Social Security Number, EEO Category, Gender
• Position, Job Description, and Supervisor
• Date of Hire, Adjusted Hire Date, Review Dates, and Last Day Worked
• Marital Status, Spouse Name, Spouse SS#
• Workers Comp Code, Rate of Pay, Employment Type, and Status

Use the standard reports out of the box or export to Excel for more detailed reporting.

We all have to track employee demographics for one reason or another. Why not keep it as simple as possible?

Job Cost: Not Just for Contractors Anymore

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Every business needs to understand and control costs. Sometimes high level cost analysis is enough, but more often than not, businesses need to know true costs on specific activities or projects in order to evaluate how profitable they are or were. It is not uncommon for companies to “guess” or estimate how profitable individual jobs or projects are. Having this precise, detailed information can take the guesswork out and help you make adjustments going forward, ensuring increased profits. (more…)

Less.

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

“Doing more with less” is a goal we’ve been helping customers achieve recently. Cutting costs, cutting unnecessary tasks, and cutting out the clutter, can all contribute to a lean, efficient, and profitable outcome.

I have listed some ideas below - some are related specifically to Dynamics GP, and some are generic.

  1. Create a ‘default calendar’ that defines how you want to spend your time in a week or month. Stop allowing interruptions and distractions that take you away from your default calendar. Post the default calendar near your desk to remind you of the hours and categories of time that are critical to your success. Let everything else go that you can, and delegate.
