Moving Data Between Companies in Dynamics GP
Thursday, May 28th, 2009Taking Advantage of Your Software Upgrades
Tuesday, May 26th, 2009Lately I’ve had some major changes in my life. If you’re like me, you aren’t always open to change. It can move us out of our comfort zones and force us to grow. I have my routines that I find comfort in - my customized family commitments calendar hangs on the refrigerator and without that I would be lost. I think I’ve passed some of this down to my 16 year-old daughter. With her older sister home for the summer we’ve had to make some changes dealing with her transportation. I just expect them to take the change and bear it, but I’m not always that easy-going when change impacts me. I watch as she struggles with this unwelcomed change in her life.
I was thinking of this today as I had the opportunity to be onsite with a client for‘What’s New in GP’ training. I love to show users all the new functionality and the improvements that Microsoft has made in new releases. (more…)
Wouldn’t it Be Great if Dynamics GP…
Wednesday, May 20th, 2009You use Dynamics GP and love how dependable, scalable, flexible and easy to use it is, but have you ever had a great idea for how GP could be made that much better? Maybe you would like to see something changed or something added - either way, what do you do with this gem, this idea? Well, the Dynamics team at Microsoft is listening. In fact, many of the enhancements that have been added to GP in recent years are a result of suggestions from customers and partners alike. So, how does one submit a suggestion?
First, go to MS Connect and if you already have a Windows LiveID, click “Sign In”. Next, you need to create a connection to Microsoft Dynamics (scroll down a little - you’ll see it). Once you have this connection, simply click on “Create New Product Feedback”. From your dashboard, which is your homepage at MS Connect, you’ll be able to keep track of the suggestions you’ve made. If you would like to know what happens to those suggestions once you make them, check out this blog post directly from the Dynamics team at Microsoft.
Incidentally, the above also applies to AX, NAV, SL and CRM, but we here at Gilchrist Scott are blatantly biased toward Dynamics GP!

Compliance doesn’t have to be difficult
Friday, May 8th, 2009Are you tracking employee data in Excel or another database outside of your accounting software system? If you outsource payroll, you probably are. If you’re using Dynamics GP you can use the employee database even though you don’t process your own payroll. You can send employee letters, produce compliance reports, or send internal status changes using one tool:
• Employee address, telephone number, birth date
• Social Security Number, EEO Category, Gender
• Position, Job Description, and Supervisor
• Date of Hire, Adjusted Hire Date, Review Dates, and Last Day Worked
• Marital Status, Spouse Name, Spouse SS#
• Workers Comp Code, Rate of Pay, Employment Type, and Status
Use the standard reports out of the box or export to Excel for more detailed reporting.
We all have to track employee demographics for one reason or another. Why not keep it as simple as possible?
You wouldn’t ask your carpenter to design your house, would you?
Friday, May 1st, 2009Remember your friend ‘Bob’, the guy who spent all his time in the high school auto repair class learning how to take apart and rebuild auto engines? You wouldn’t have him design a new car for you, but if your ride was sputtering he might be your first call. Bob learned how to use a specific set of tools and, using those tools, he was really good.
Even though Bob knows car tools very well, he doesn’t know woodworking tools, or plumbing tools or drafting tools. To you and I, all of the tools may look baffling and similar, but they aren’t.
Information Technology is the same, just not as grimy. (more…)
